| Carl-Uwe Steeb, known as Charly to his friends, reached a career high ranking of world no. 14 in 1990. A valued member of the German Davis Cup team, in 1998 Charly defeated Mats Wilander in an epic five set match (8-10, 1-6, 6-2, 6-4, 8-6). This helped Germany to win the Davis Cup for the first time in the history of the competition. The following year Charly again helped Germany take the Davis Cup crown against Sweden. In 1996 Charly retired from the ATP circuit and in 1999 he took up the post of German Davis Cup captain until 2001, succeeding Boris Becker. He now enjoys commentating for German Television and has co-authored a book about how to keep fit and healthy through exercise.
