Peter McNamara is best remembered as one half of the famous Aussie duo, The Two Macs, but he also had a distinguished singles career, spending two successive years in the top ten.
In 1981 he won the German Open beating Jimmy Connors in the final, reached the last 16 at Roland Garros where he lost to Ivan Llendl and the quarter-finals of Wimbledon where he was beaten by Bjorn Borg. These successes on the two most different surfaces, grass and clay, are a testament to his versatility. This good run of form continued and he was an ever present force in the top ten for most of the following two years.
It was for his skill in doubles though that Macca is often best remembered. Teamed mostly with fellow Aussie Paul McNamee, he won 19 doubles titles, including three Grand Slams. The two Macs had games that complemented each other perfectly and their charisma on court made them one of the most popular duos at a time when doubles was still as keenly followed as singles.
In March 1983 when at his career high rank of 7 Peter suffered a horrific injury, tearing the ligaments in his knee. Doctors warned it would end his playing career. He announced his retirement from the sport, but underwent surgery and made a comeback 21 months later in 1984. Sadly however, he would never recapture his previous eminence in the game.
Since retiring from the ATP Tour, McNamara has proved to be a top coach, working with Mark Philippoussis. His voice has also become a regular on commentary teams around the world and he is now the Business Development Manager for the Australian Open. Sit back and enjoy some fabulous entertainment from the Crocodile Dundee of Tennis. Maccaâs big smile and mischievous sense of humour have made him one of the most popular figures on the Champions Tour and, as you will see, his tennis still belies his age.
