With his late twin brother Tim, Gullikson formed one of the most popular doubles teams that tennis has ever known, winning ten tour titles and reaching the final of Wimbledon in 1983 and the US Open semi-finals in 1982.
Yet because of the dominance of John McEnroe and Peter Fleming, they never once represented their country in the Davis Cup. However Tom made amends when he succeeded Tom Gorman as American captain in 1992 and three years later led his nation to triumph in 1995 with a memorable win against Russia in Moscow. Nevertheless in Britain he is still probably best known for being the man on the other side of the net when, in 1981, McEnroe let forth his now trademark verbal volley: âYou cannot be serious!â.
Married to Julie, with two children, Tom proudly runs the Tim and Tom Gullikson Foundation after Tim died so tragically from brain cancer nine years ago.
